Rules

  1. Parents, legal guardians, and teachers/facilitators are allowed to submit entries for students. Students should not generate an entry for themselves. 
  2. Student participants must be ages 5-18.  The youngest age to participate is 5 and the oldest age to participate in the contest is 18. 
  3. Participants can reside in the United States or internationally. 
  4. Artwork must be a two-dimensional painting or drawing.  
  5. A photograph must be taken of the 2-D artwork and uploaded with the registration. 
  6. This is not a photography contest. Artwork must also not be traced or copied from published photographs, or other artists’ works. Photography submissions will be disqualified. 
  7. Poetry submissions have a maximum of four stanzas. 
  8. Poetry can be submitted in any language, but there must also be an English translation of the poetry within the same document. 
  9. Poetry must be entered as a pdf. 
  10. All submissions must be entered online. Do not mail art or poetry as it will not be entered in the contest or returned. 
  11. The subject of the artwork and poetry must be original and created by the student.  
  12. Any submission found to infringe on copyright laws, such as pictures originating from Disney, Marvel, DC Comics, Pixar, etc., or contain threatening or offensive material will be disqualified.  
  13. File uploads cannot be larger than 50MB. 
  14. All upload files need to have the student’s last name and the title of the artwork. Example: Williams_RocketInSpace.jpg or Bennett_MoonWalk.pdf 

Official Contest Rules

These are the official rules governing the Space Art and Poetry Contest. All references herein to “you” apply to the adult submitting the Space Art and Poetry Contest entry (the “Applicant”), and the Applicant shall be the parent, legal guardian, teacher, or facilitator of the child submitting the artwork or poetry (the “Entrant”). 

By submitting to the Space Art and Poetry Contest (through the application process) materials in response to the contest prompt (including photography of artwork, text, illustration, and other submission content) relating to proposed or current activities in space (the “Materials”), and in consideration for the opportunity to have your artwork or poetry considered by Space Art and Poetry Contest to be visually displayed during a space mission, you understand and agree to be bound by the following terms and conditions: 

  1. The Space Art and Poetry Contest: Space Art and Poetry Contest will open on March 9, 2023, at 8 a.m. GMT, and will close on April 17th, 2023, at 11:59 p.m. GMT. Submissions shall be judged at the close of the Space Art and Poetry Contest Period. One student representative per category (art and poetry) and per age grouping (5 – 8, 9 – 13, 14 – 18) will be determined from all entries received within the Space Art and Poetry Contest Entry Period, for a total of six selected student representatives. Each artwork student representative will be awarded the opportunity to have their artwork displayed during a space mission. The poetry student representatives will have the opportunity to have their poetry read during a space mission. Prizes are further defined below in Section 6. Space Art and Poetry Contest, in its sole discretion, may shorten or extend any opening or closing times for submissions and may supplement any evaluation criteria or awards, or other Contest Details. All entries must be submitted as required by the Contest Details and in these Official Rules. An entry constitutes acceptance of these Official Rules.
  2. Eligibility: Except where prohibited by law, the Space Art and Poetry Contest is open to Applicants and Entrants who are legal residents of the continental United States and any country outside of the United States. Applicants must be 18 or older and must be a parent, legal guardian, or classroom teacher of the Entrant. Entrants must be between 5 and 18 years of age as of March 8, 2023. Employees and directors (including immediate family members and members of the same household) of Space Art and Poetry Contest, prize suppliers, agents, and their respective parents, affiliated companies, subsidiaries, and advertising and promotion agencies, and any other entities associated with this Space Art and Poetry Contest are also not eligible to participate. Participation constitutes Applicant’s full and unconditional agreement to these Official Rules, as well as Space Art and Poetry Contest’s decisions and/or interpretations under these Official Rules, which are final and binding in all matters related to the Space Art and Poetry Contest. Under no circumstances will the Space Art and Poetry Contest be liable for the teacher’s failure to consult its school’s authorities and administrators or for failing to obtain the necessary permission(s). Teacher or facilitator Applicants entering artwork or poetry on behalf of the Entrant must obtain permission from the parent or guardian of the eligible entrant. Under no circumstances will the Space Art and Poetry Contest be liable for any errors, omissions, or negligence of the teacher or facilitator while managing the guardian permissions.
    The opportunity to be selected as an age group representative is contingent upon fulfilling all requirements set forth herein. 
  3. Sponsor and Administrator:Space Art and Poetry Contest is sponsoring this art and poetry contest. Space Art and Poetry Contest may share Applicant and Entrant information and entry Materials “with the Administrator”to facilitate selection and notification of the Space Art Contest representatives. 
  4. How to Enter: During the Space Art and Poetry Contest Entry Period, Entrants must access the web portal located at spaceartcontest.com, and complete and submit the application form including providing an attachment of a photo of their artwork or a pdf of their poetry. The artwork created by the Entrant must relate to the contest prompt, “What would it look like if we lived in space?” The submission must be the original work of the student applicant and cannot be edited post-submission. The poetry can be in any language, but it must also have an English translation if written in a language other than English. Eligible artwork or poetry must not contain any content that includes copyrighted or trademarked or other intellectual property rights of third parties including but not limited to text, images, and music; vulgar, profane, violent, or political language or images; other persons besides the Entrant; or material that violates any applicable law. Any use of the aforementioned within the Applicant submission will result in disqualification. To register, Applicant will be required to provide their first name, last name, phone number, zipcode, country of residence, and email address, as well as the first name and grade level of the Entrant. Use of any automated system to participate is prohibited and will result in disqualification. Applicants may only use one email address in connection with this Space Art and Poetry Contest. Use of multiple email accounts to enter by the same individual is prohibited and may result in disqualification. Limit of one submission per category per Entrant. Space Art and Poetry Contest is not responsible for lost, late, incomplete, invalid, or unintelligible submissions, which will be disqualified. The Space Art and Poetry Contest, in its sole discretion, has the right to reject any entry. Data charges may apply if you are submitting an entry from your mobile phone to enter this Space Art and Poetry Contest. 
  5. Selection of Category Representatives: After the close of the Contest, Space Art and Poetry Contest will select one category representative for art and poetry per age group, which is a total of six representatives based on art and poetry content, in response to the Contest question. The content will be judged with equal weight based on:

     

    Artwork 

      • Relates to the theme  
      • Imagination and Creativity 
      • Composition/Design 
      • Quality/Technical Skills 
      • Overall impression  

    Poetry 

      • Relates to the theme 
      • Originality 
      • Conventions of poetry 
      • Word usage 
      • Grammar, mechanics, and spelling 
      • Sensory details 

    In the event of a tie, the Director of Education for the Limitless Space Institute will choose the selected representative submission based on the above criteria.

    Selected representatives are required to sign a publicity and liability release, an assignment of rights to the Media content, and any additional documentation required to formalize the Applicant’s entry. Additional documentation may be required prior to the disclosure of Space Art and Poetry Contest confidential information. Selected representatives for each category will be notified by May 1st, 2023 and are required to return the appropriate documentation within three (3) days of contact or Space Art and Poetry Contest reserves the right to disqualify the selected representative and offer the prize to the Entrant with the next highest judging score. 

  1. Selected Representatives: Each Entrant with a selected piece of artwork within their age grouping will have their work presented from space by Astronaut John Shoffner. The selected representative’s poetry from each age grouping will be read out loud from space by Astronaut John Shoffner. The date and time of the art and poetry presentations are to be determined by the launch date and mission window that is allotted for John to make the presentation. Dates and times are subject to change.

     

    Each valid Registrant will receive a digital certificate of completion for the entrant that will be sent to the email address that was submitted during registration. The digital certificates will be sent after the completion of the contest. The Space Art and Poetry Contest is not responsible for a certificate not being received if a valid email address was not entered during registration. 
  1. You agree that Space Art and Poetry Contest may reproduce and show, display and transmit in physical or digital form the Applicant’s and Entrant’s name and likeness and any media content, and associated Materials with the first name, age, state of residence, or country of residence of the Entrant, whether the child that created the artwork or poetry is selected as a representative, potential representative or not selected, in connection with the Contest for which the Material was submitted or for any other Contest in order to promote, market, explain or discuss the Space Art and Poetry Contest. By virtue of Applicant’s submission for the Entrant, Space Art and Poetry Contest is granted a perpetual license and reserves all rights to use the Material (including text and images) for educational, demonstration, and/or promotional purposes, in any media, worldwide and in perpetuity, without further compensation to you and your heirs.
  2. As a condition of entering the Contest, you release Space Art and Poetry Contest, AXIOM, the Limitless Space Institute,and Crayola LLC, its subsidiaries and affiliates from any and all claims, liability or causes of action arising from or related to the Materials, and you will not be entitled to any compensation from Space Art and Poetry Contest, AXIOM, Limitless Space Institute or Crayola with respect to your Entry, including the submitted Materials (artwork or poetry), other than as provided to selected representatives of the Contest.
  3. You agree and understand that you are submitting the feedback Materials on a NON-CONFIDENTIAL basis, and agree that Space Art and Poetry Contest, AXIOM, Limitless Space Institute, or Crayola will not be obligated to keep secret any information contained in the Materials, and Space Art and Poetry Contest is under no obligation of confidentiality or non-use regarding any aspect of the Materials. No contract, obligation, or agreement to adopt or compensate you for the use of Materials or requirement to negotiate regarding the Materials is to be implied from Space Art and Poetry Contest consideration or review of the Materials.

     

    You further acknowledge and understand that neither the Applicant or the Entrant are employees of Space Art and Poetry Contest, AXIOM, Limitless Space Institute, and Crayola LLC, its subsidiaries and its affiliates, and that this Agreement shall not be construed to create any association, partnership, joint venture, employment, or agency relationship between you and the Space Art and Poetry Contest for any purpose. You have no authority (and shall not hold yourself out as having authority) to bind Space Art and Poetry Contest, AXIOM, Limitless Space Institute, or Crayola and you shall not make any agreements or representations on Space Art Contest, AXIOM, Limitless Space Institute, or Crayola’s behalf. 
  1. You represent and warrant that (i) the entrant is at least five (5) years of age and no older than eighteen (18) years of age as of the Beginning Date of this Contest (ii) you (the Applicant) are at least eighteen (18) years of age as of the Beginning Date of this Competition; (ii) the artwork and/or poetry (Material) submitted in association with the Contest are original to the Entrant, and the Entrant is the sole owner, creator, inventor and/or author of the Materials; (iii) Space Art and Poetry Contest’s use of the Materials, as contemplated by its request for submission of Materials, do not infringe the rights of any third parties (including copyright, trademark, rights of likeness and rights of publicity), and that you have all rights and permissions necessary for Space Art and Poetry Contest’s use of the Materials; (iv) you have full right and authorization to submit the Materials and that no other person or entity has or shall have any right, title or interest in or to the Materials; and (v) the Materials (including other photographs, drawings or illustrations substantially similar to the Materials or those depicting the same subject matter from the same photo shoot) (collectively the “Similar Materials”), have not been used, or permitted to be used, for publicly available commercial purposes, including but not limited to greeting cards and advertisements. 
  2. Space Art and Poetry Contest is not responsible for lost, stolen, illegible, misdirected or late submissions. Space Art and Poetry Contest assumes no responsibility for computer system, phone line, hardware, software or program malfunctions or other errors, failures of any kind, delayed computer transmissions or network connection problems that are human or technical in nature. Space Art and Poetry Contest reserves the right in its sole discretion to cancel or suspend the Contest, in its entirety or only in part, should any virus, bug, tampering, unauthorized intervention, fraud, technical failures or other causes impact the administration, security or integrity of the Contest.
  3. This Agreement sets forth the entire understanding and agreement of the parties with respect to the subject matter hereof and supersedes all other oral or written representations and understandings. This Agreement shall be governed by the laws of Texas without regard to the principles of conflicts of laws and may not be amended, modified or waived except in a written document signed by you and Space Art and Poetry Contest.
