Just did my daily skim of Forbes, Fast Company, Bloomberg News, and Fortune. Here's what I'm feeling: Quit telling women to negotiate more, negotiate better, set boundaries, lose the filler words, speak with authority, network, build a better brand, find mentors, stop doing non-promotable work, seek feedback, add value, know your worth, be visible, let go of perfectionism, and invest in your skills. Why do we keep framing these as individual challenges for women to overcome? The narrative often centers around 'fixing' women's behaviors, but what about addressing the structural biases that necessitate such advice? Instead of perpetuating the cycle of 'advice,' let's tackle the root causes of inequality. I'd like to start reading more articles on actions organizations and leaders can take to break down these systemic barriers instead of putting the burden of change on workers and women. Someone write those articles, please. Then I'll pay for whatever sits behind the paywall. #GenderEquality #Inclusion #WorkplaceDiversity #Leadership
I'm so glad you called this out, Laurie. I used to be guilty of this. Myself. Personally. Women might actually be the guiltiest of all parties, actually. I was/am so good at self-advocating, I couldn't understand why everyone didn't just call bullshit and get on with their holy business. It took a little growing up on my side (and 3 daughters) to realize Joan of Arc on her own horse could only rebel yell so loud. The change we need happens at a system level. And that takes a lot of gumption ...and patience. Much easier to rebel yell. But I feel so fortunate to know there's a huge united front out there who are patiently impatient to change it all. I try to be the fresh writer you describe, explaining how systems can dismantle barriers to women and all disadvantaged talent. I promise to do more. Thanks for writing this. ❤️
Thank you for highlighting this crucial perspective. 🙌
Agree completely Laurie Ruettimann - was just having this conversation with Meg Bear - first off it assumes there is something wrong with us and our behaviors, but it also discounts the unique ways people find to build a career that fits their personal values and beliefs.
Well said. Our words create worlds. I'm not paying for what is sitting behind those paywalls either Laurie Ruettimann!
I tell both men and women these things where appropriate for their personal goals, while also challenging inequality. This is an “and” thing, not an or thing for action taking professionals.
Seems to be a message loud and clear I'm getting today... women do NOT need fixing.
💯
Standing ovation 👏🏼
Agree! Fix the problem and stop pointing a finger at those impacted the most by it. Equity/equality, DEI and Corporate Social Responsibility initiatives impact the bottom line and companies that act on this are more successful.
