Things that stall learning #1: OVERWHELM 😶 When was the last time you were overwhelmed? Do you remember what was happening in your head? Emotionally first, then logically? For most people, a state of overwhelm stops them in their tracks. The length of the stop depends on the person and their response. But most of us are stopped, at least for a bit. When I'm overwhelmed, my brain starts to spiral a bit. It feels like there are too many thoughts and nowhere to put them. I've learned to grab a notebook and start chunking, sorting, and organizing until I have a workable solution or plan. But, what if that overwhelm happens when I'm trying to learn something new? The same thing. My brain stops for a bit, doing that spiraling thing. If I'm in the middle of an on demand course/video/podcast, I can hit pause. If I'm sitting in a live class, I can't. If the facilitator keeps moving on, I miss everything they share after the point of overwhelm. Are you taking the point of potential overwhelm into consideration when designing learning and learning strategy? How much is too much? When are you likely to lose learners because they have shut down due to overwhelm? #DesignConsiderations #StrategyConsiderations #ThoughtfulDesign #LearningDesign #LearningStrategy #Empathy #Overwhelm #LearningandDevelopment #TalentDevelopment

Overwhelm happens a lot during tests & quizzes...

In all my trainings, coaching, and workshops, I *try* to put myself in the seat of the other person. What are they dealing with right now? This is probably coming in the middle of a busy week (aren't they all?!? What does the client/participant need to get the most out of this time? Overwhelm is so common, that if you're not thinking about it in your design phase, you're leaving people behind and potentially frustrated.
