How do you promote a healthy work-life balance for yourself and your team?
I find that all of us, but leaders especially, do not structure enough time to think. To think critically. To think creatively. To think deeply. But that process of deep thought - for me, it comes with quick hikes in nature - is not just a way to think through complex challenges more easily but also a way to anchor yourself around the areas of your work that feed your greatest curiosities and that give you the greatest fulfillment. Because those are the areas your mind will go to when have the space to think freely and deeply.

How do you measure the impact of storytelling on your communication goals?
Storytelling is often intimidating because it’s seen as art and the result of talent that is hard to learn if you don’t have it already. Storytelling is actually mostly science. For as long as there have been good stories there have been clear rules - the three part narrative arch, the need for tension then resolution, the connection of the big and the small through anecdotes and archetypes. Anyone can be a great storyteller. And that’s because everyone is already a storyteller in the way we talk about or day or ourselves or our work. To become great is controllable. It just requires studying, practicing and perfecting. As Joan Didion said “we tell ourselves stories in order to live.” Today that is true for how we work too.

What are some common mistakes to avoid when listening actively?
I’ve come to see note taking as the best way to manage all of the above. It helps make sure you come to a conversation with curiosity and with the intent of learning. It helps me feel more like a student in conversations where I want to be actively listening.

How can thought leaders foster a culture of learning and curiosity?
I’ve defined thought leadership as having authentic, relevant, insightful things to say about a few key issues and saying those things over a sustained period of time in order to provoke new thoughts and actions by others. Each of the words in that definition matters. More on why here for those interested! https://www.linkedin.com/business/marketing/blog/agency/what-does-it-really-mean-to-be-a-thought-leader
