The iPhone is finally getting a facepalm emoji

The new symbols, which join a catalogue of 1,601 emojis already available, will be included when iOS 10.2 is release, expected to be later this month. Other operating systems are likely to have to wait a little longer for the new characters.

As well as facepalm and shruggie, which are guaranteed to prove popular, the new emoji have a heavy emphasis on more animals and food types, including gorillas, foxes, avocados and croissants. The new characters were approved by the Unicode consortium earlier this year, and are now being implemented.

There's also a symbol for clown, which, given the recent trend for dressing up as scary clowns and terrorising neighbourhoods, is either good timing or unfortunate .

 As well as the new characters, several of the current crop have been redesigned, including many transport emoji.

 The full list of 72 new emoji are below, although they are the designs provided by Emojipedia, so will look slightly different on iPhones and iPads.
