Avelo is looking to collect some passport stamps. The carrier applied on Friday for authority to operate flights from the US to both Mexico and the Dominican Republic.
The carrier did not offer specific details on which routes would be served nor a potential start date, other than that it hopes to launch the services in 2024.
Given its operating structure, the routes could operate from any of Avelo’s east coast bases. Flights from Orlando and Raleigh-Durham would keep the travel time below three hours, something the carrier generally favors. That said, the carrier also operates twice-weekly flights from New Haven to San Juan. Flights from there to Cancun or Punta Cana (likely, but not guaranteed destinations; the carrier operates charters to both already) are comparable in distance.
The regulatory approval process is necessary, but unlikely to pose any issues for the carrier, at least on the US side.
Potentially more problematic would be reciprocal approval from Dominican authorities while an application from one of that country’s airlines remains pending with the US Department of Transportation. Mexican authorities also recently expressed concern over how the US is handling the Delta/Aeromexico joint cooperating agreement as a negotiating cudgel replacing diplomatic communications. That country could similarly drag out approvals as a ploy to force the other action.
