American Airlines wants to bring back flights between New York City and Tokyo. The carrier applied to the US DOT today requesting access to the daily operating slots at Haneda airport, with plans to operated from JFK.
American has firm plans to commence daily year-round nonstop roundtrip service between New York City’s John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) and Haneda with these seven weekly slot pairs using widebody aircraft.
– DOT filing
American is not alone in seeking access to those Haneda slots. United Airlines previously requested access to those slots seeking to move its Houston flights from Narita to Haneda. The slots were previously operated by Delta Air Lines. Delta tried to move those slots to an alternate market but was denied but the DOT. A couple weeks ago Delta formally conceded the it would no longer operate its Portland-Tokyo route and returned the slots for reallocation.
With both United and American seeking access to the slots the DOT must now run a selection proceeding to determine which airline will receive the slots. American operates its Japan services under a codeshare agreement with Japan Airlines. United similarly operates in partnership with ANA.
American previously operated JFK-Haneda from 2011 to 2013, when US carriers only had access to night slots in Tokyo. The flight times for those flights were inconvenient and eventually American halted the service.
