Planning a trip to New York City this summer? We’ve got you covered, with insider knowledge on everything from free activities and cool events to what to pack (and what to leave at home). Here’s what to know before you go:
The Subway Stations Are Not Air-Conditioned
Although the subway trains are air-conditioned, the stations are not. The heat will hit you like a wall as you descend into the station, and waiting on the platform can be brutal. At some stations, the tracks are close enough to the entrance that you can wait in the relatively cooler air upstairs and only head down once you hear a train approaching. Make sure you dress appropriately for the heat, wearing loose and breathable clothing. And remember—don’t get excited if you see an empty subway car on an otherwise packed train. It’s empty for a reason (broken air-conditioning, mystery smell or spill, etc.).
Get Out On the Water for Free
New York City can get hot and humid in summer. While wealthy New Yorkers decamp to their homes in the Hamptons to escape the heat, you can find relief for free by getting out on the water. The Staten Island Ferry offers views of the Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island, and the Manhattan skyline similar to those you’d get on a paid boat cruise. Or, take a shorter journey on the Governors Island Ferry, which is free on Saturday and Sunday mornings (and just $3 round-trip at other times).
You can even take out a kayak or rowboat for free at the Downtown Boathouse or Village Community Boathouse.
Know Where to Find Public Bathrooms
Don’t despair when you see “bathrooms for customers only” signs everywhere you look—it’s easy to find a bathroom in New York City. Most public parks in New York City have free restrooms available (like Bryant Park, whose bathrooms have a classical music soundtrack and fresh flowers to enhance your experience). Check the NYC Parks website for a full list of public bathroom locations.
New York City Police Department stations also allow the public to use their bathrooms, as do many large department stores and hotels.
Don’t Miss the Free Plays & Concerts
If you’re on a budget, summertime is a great time to visit New York City, since there are free outdoor events going on practically every day. Our top picks:
• Shakespeare in the Park
• Summer Stage
• The Met Summer Recital Series
• New York Philharmonic Concerts in the Park
• Good Morning America Summer Concert Series
Pack a Refillable Water Bottle
It’s essential to stay hydrated to combat the heat, so save your money (and the environment) by bringing a refillable water bottle (look for an insulated one to keep your water refreshingly ice cold all day long). The city has installed free water fountains and water bottle refilling station across all five boroughs, so you’ll never be empty for long. (Click here for a full list of locations.) New York City’s tap water has even won awards for its taste, so drink up while you’re in town.
Leave the Flip Flops at Home
Nothing screams summer footwear like flip flops, but you don’t want to pack those for summer in New York City unless you’re heading to Coney Island or Rockaway Beach. First of all, they aren’t great for walking long distances; and second, your feet will be completely dirt-encrusted by the end of the day from the grime of the streets. Treat your feet to something more supportive, protective and stylish, like our five picks below:
