The Silver American Eagle - Random Year option offers collectors and investors the opportunity to acquire this iconic coin at a discounted price while adding an element of surprise and variety to their collection.

Mintage years of these silver bullion coins are subject to inventory, so years will vary.

Coin Highlights:

  • Diameter: 40.6 millimeters (1.598 inches)

  • Thickness: 2.98 millimeters (0.1173 inches)

  • Weight: 31.103 grams (1.000 troy ounce; 1 troy oz)

  • Mintage Locations: The American Silver Eagle coins have been minted at multiple United States Mint locations including the Philadelphia Mint, San Francisco Mint, West Point Mint, and the Denver Mint.

  • Silver Content: Each Silver American Eagle contains one troy ounce of .999 fine silver (99.9% pure), making it a tangible and valuable asset for investors looking to diversify their portfolios with precious metals.

  • Legal Tender: Despite its silver melt value, the Silver American Eagle holds a face value of one dollar, backed by the United States government. However, its true worth far exceeds its nominal denomination due to the value of the silver it contains.

  • Random Year Option: The Random Year Silver American Eagle provides collectors and investors with the excitement of not knowing which specific year they will receive, adding an element of surprise and variety to their collection. This option allows individuals to acquire these prestigious coins at a lower price point compared to specific year offerings.

  • Collectibility: The Silver American Eagle is highly sought after by collectors worldwide, both for its stunning design and its status as the official silver bullion coin of the United States. Its popularity ensures liquidity and demand in the numismatic market.

  • Investment: With its naturally limited supply value with high global demand tied to the price of silver, the Silver American Eagle serves as a reliable hedge against economic uncertainty and inflation. Its status as a government-backed bullion coin further enhances its appeal to investors seeking stability and security in their portfolios.

Whether you're a seasoned collector or a first-time investor, the Silver American Eagle - Random Year option offers an excellent opportunity to acquire a piece of American history and invest in a tangible asset with enduring value.

American Silver Eagle Design

The American Silver Eagle features stunning and iconic designs on both its obverse and reverse sides, each rich in symbolism and historical significance.

Obverse Design:

The obverse design of the American Silver Eagle features a captivating depiction of Lady Liberty, striding confidently towards the sunrise. She is draped in the folds of the American flag, symbolizing the principles of liberty, freedom, and opportunity. With her right hand extended in a gesture of welcome and hope, and her left hand cradling branches of oak and laurel, Lady Liberty represents resilience, strength, and the pursuit of peace. The rays of the sun radiate behind her, signifying a new dawn and a promising future for the nation. This design is a modern interpretation of Adolph A. Weinman's classic Walking Liberty motif, originally created for the 1916 half dollar.

The American Silver Eagle underwent a significant design change in 2021, transitioning from what is commonly referred to as Type-1 to Type-2. Here's a description of both designs:

Type-1 Design (1986-2021):

The Type-1 design of the American Silver Eagle features a classic portrayal of Lady Liberty on the obverse side. She is depicted striding confidently towards the sunrise, draped in the American flag. With her right hand extended in a gesture of welcome and hope, and her left hand cradling branches of oak and laurel, Lady Liberty symbolizes resilience, strength, and the pursuit of peace. The rays of the sun radiate behind her, signifying a new dawn and a promising future for the nation. This design is a modern interpretation of Adolph A. Weinman's iconic Walking Liberty motif, originally created for the 1916 half dollar.

On the reverse side of the Type-1 American Silver Eagle, a majestic heraldic eagle is depicted. The eagle is shown with outstretched wings, standing proudly behind a liberty shield, evoking the spirit of strength, courage, and protection. In its talons, the eagle clutches an olive branch, symbolizing peace, and a bundle of arrows, signifying the nation's readiness to defend itself if necessary. In its beak is a banner which reads “E Pluribus Unum.” Above the eagle's head, thirteen stars form a halo-like design, representing the original thirteen colonies and the unity of the states. This powerful design, created by John M. Mercanti, captures the essence of America's values, ideals, and heritage.

Type-2 Design (2021-present):

The Type-2 design of the American Silver Eagle marks a significant departure from its predecessor on the reverse side of the silver bullion coin. Although there are some minor changes to the obverse side design and along the reeded edge for security, most of the significant changes take place on the reverse side. The reverse side of the Type-2 American Silver Eagle underwent a significant redesign in 2021. Instead of the previous heraldic eagle design, the new reverse features a dynamic and naturalistic depiction of a bald American eagle in flight.

The eagle is shown with its wings fully extended, soaring above a mountainous landscape. Its powerful talons clutch an oak branch, symbolizing strength and endurance. The inscription "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" appears above the eagle, while the denomination "ONE DOLLAR" and the weight and purity of the silver are displayed below.

The new reverse design was created by Emily Damstra, a renowned artist and illustrator, and it brings a fresh perspective to the series while honoring the majestic beauty of the American bald eagle. Overall, the Type-2 design brings a fresh perspective to the iconic imagery of the American Silver Eagle while maintaining its status as a cherished symbol of national pride and identity.

The Type-2 design of the American Silver Eagle was created by Emily Damstra, a talented artist and illustrator known for her work in the field of coin and medal design. Damstra was selected by the United States Mint through a competitive design process to refresh the obverse design of the American Silver Eagle for the first time since its introduction in the Liberty Coin Act of 1986.

The reverse design of the Type-2 American Silver Eagle was executed by Michael Gaudioso, a sculptor-engraver at the United States Mint. Gaudioso translated Damstra's vision for the heraldic eagle into a dynamic and lifelike depiction, bringing a new level of detail and dimensionality to the iconic imagery of the reverse side.

Together, Damstra and Gaudioso's collaborative efforts resulted in a fresh and contemporary interpretation of the American Silver Eagle, maintaining its status as a cherished symbol of American heritage and identity.

Important to Remember: The silver coins offered in Brilliantly Uncirculated (BU) condition can exhibit natural signs of wear such as marks, blemishes, and tarnish. This is particularly common for older silver coins that have been in contact with air containing sulfur gases. Traces of sulfur, which are naturally found in the air, lead to the discoloration and darkening of silver over time.

Nothing like free, high premium silver!
I received my second Silver Eagle as a "thank you" bonus for a second order, and size of order, from Money Metals. First, the coin is exquisite and a great addition to my collection/stack. Secondly, because Silver Eagles have been a very high premium ounce coin for a couple of years now, I am not purchasing them separately. My first purchase from Money Metals was the silver starter set with a Silver Eagle, so with this one I now have a pair that are my most valuable silver one ounce pieces.
