Blunt: Trump’s Mexico deal is message to China

Missouri U.S. Senator Roy Blunt says President Trump’s deal with Mexico sends the biggest message to China – not Mexico. On Sunday’s Face the Nation, Senator Blunt said the president has consistently been willing to use tariffs as part of international negotiations.

“The president believes that tariffs are a significant positive economic tool,” said Senator Blunt. “Lots of people in the country agree with that; it’s never been my view, but it’s always been the president’s view.”

Blunt, a Republican, says he would rather have open markets. Trump dropped his tariff threat Friday but has since said he could still impose tariffs if Mexico doesn’t reach its end of the bargain to reduce the influx of immigrants into the U.S. Trump has also threatened increased tariffs on China.
