IL Pork Producers take message, and bacon, to the IL state capitol

IL Pork Producers brought their message, and bacon, to the IL state capitol Wednesday.

Jennifer Tirey is executive director of the Illinois Pork Producers Association.

“Bacon Day for Illinois!”  She says, “Honestly, a lot of it is talking with urban legislators that really don’t have a lot of background knowledge when it comes to hog farming.”

Tirey tells Brownfield it’s a unique way to connect with legislators.

“A lot of the conversations have led to farm tours.” She says, “So that’s usually one of the biggest questions is, ‘Well, have you ever been on a hog farm? Would you like to come on a hog farm?’ They make the policy for our industry.”

She says their message was delivered with a complimentary BLT sandwich.

“Bacon is just such a favorite of everyone, right?”  She says, “And so it’s a real easy product for us to be able to celebrate.”

Illinois Senate Joint Resolution 50 proclaims May 1st as Bacon Day in the state.
