More rain, severe storms & a cool-off for the Heartland; heat wave to build into the West

The western U.S. is bracing for another heat wave, with skyrocketing temperatures expected during the weekend.   By early next week, temperatures will broadly exceed 100°F at non-coastal, lower-elevation sites in the Northwest, with some locations expected to top 110°F.  Very hot weather will also return across the Desert Southwest.  Farther east, areas from Texas to the southern Atlantic States will continue to endure hot, humid conditions.

In contrast, ample rain should fall from the Midwest into the Northeast, with some of the heaviest precipitation (locally 2 to 4 inches) occurring in the Great Lakes region.

Meanwhile, mostly dry weather will prevail during the next 5 day in the western Gulf Coast region, including much of Texas, as well as the northern High Plains and Far West.
