Grow Smart scholarship goes to University of Nebraska student

The 2018 Grow Smart Scholarship, sponsored by BASF was awarded at the National Association of Farm Broadcasting Convention to Alexandra Voichoskie-Hansen, an agriculture and environmental sciences communication major at University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

She is the daughter of Kert and Jenny Hansen and she first attended Southeast Community College in Beatrice, Nebraska where she earned her associate of applied science in agriculture business and management technology, as well as a certificate in precision agriculture.

Although she had little experience and no intention of pursuing farm broadcasting, Voichoskie-Hansen accepted and completed an internship as a farm broadcaster at KRVN Rural Radio Network in Lincoln, Nebraska.

“We are serving our farmers and ranchers. We’re not advocating for agriculture. We don’t need to do that because the people we are working for already know what agriculture is and because I have a production background, because we raise cattle and grow corn and beans, I knew I needed to serve the people who are doing that job. So that was a no-brainer for me.”

After her graduation from UNL she now hopes to land a career in farm broadcasting or a position that combines both ag communications and ag education.
