Young farmer adjusts to new opportunities on the farm

A young Nebraska farmer is 11 weeks in to managing three new pullet barns as part of a partnership with Lincoln Premium Poultry and Costco.

Hannah Borg returned to her family’s farm after graduating from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in May.  

Since then, Borg says she has been in the barns every day raising chickens.

“It’s been really hard- I’m not only adjusting to the farm life of transitioning back from college to the farm but I’m also learning new barns and news systems,” she says. “We’re learning all the ups and downs of raising poultry for Costco. It has been hard, but it’s also been really rewarding.”

She spoke to Brownfield during the National FFA New Century Farmer Conference in Indianapolis this week.

Borg says she is finding her place in the operation.

“It’s a way different experience working every day on it compared to growing up on it because now I’m invested more in the financial side,” she says. “I’m figuring out what my vision is for the farm- my vision right now is to survive and someday that’s going to be a thriving season.”

Borg was one of 35 students selected to participate in this year’s New Century Farmer Conference.

She says the event is a great opportunity to connect with young farmers who are passionate about agriculture and hear about the different crops they grow.
