Why Mexico’s GMO corn ban matters

If Mexico’s GMO corn ban goes into effect in 2024, University of Missouri’s Food and Agricultural Policy Research Institute’s Pat Westhoff says it would negatively affect U.S. corn demand. Mexico is the top market for U.S. corn exports.

“If they were to sharply reduce or eliminate corn imports to the United States, that would have a very large market impact.”

Westhoff tells Brownfield uncertainty is the biggest problem with this biotech dispute.

“If we knew today with 100% certainty Mexico would not import GMO corn in 2024, the scrambling would begin where we would try to figure out if we could get enough seed to satisfy Mexico’s demands.”

Westhoff encourages farmers to closely monitor the outcome of the discussions between the U.S. and Mexico.
