Weed control could be an issue on prevented planting acres

Purdue University Extension Weed Specialist Bill Johnson says growers who had prevented planting acres last year should focus on weed control this growing season.

“We’re going to have weed seedbank in those fields and we’re going to really have some headaches to deal with in 2020,” he says.

Advice he has for growers is…“try to review some of your notes even if they’re just mental – think about what weeds were problematic for you last year and plan accordingly,” he says. “The other thing that we’re really trying to get people to do is to think about residual herbicides as the backbone of their weed control program.”

Johnson says many growers have relied on post-emergence herbicides in the past. He says growers should consider relying on residual herbicides and then use post-emergence as a clean-up option.

Brownfield spoke to Johnson at the 2020 Top Farmer Conference.
