USMCA leaders working to ratify agreement

Ag Secretary Sonny Perdue says he’s cautiously optimistic the U.S. Mexico Canada Agreement will have congressional approval by summer.

Perdue was joined by his Canadian and Mexican counterparts this morning at the Ag Outlook Forum.

“We’re moving as expeditiously as possible (on USMCA consideration), we’ve notified through the U.S. trade ambassador and Congress and they will have an opportunity to discuss that,” he says. “We’ll build momentum as each nation ratifies.”

All three countries must ratify the agreement.

Canada Minister of Agriculture Lawrence MacAulay and Mexico Secretary of Agriculture Victor Villalobos say they have also given the proper notice and are working to ratify the USMCA.

The leaders also discussed steel and aluminum tariffs. Perdue says the expectation is that a completed trilateral agreement would lead to the removal of tariffs.

“It’s in all of our best interests to see that happen, so we’ve had conversations about that and are working toward that end,” he says.

The 95th annual USDA Ag Outlook Forum continues through tomorrow.
