USDA extends acreage reporting deadline in 12 states

The USDA has extended the acreage reporting deadline to July 22 for spring planted crops in twelve states.  The twelve states include Arkansas, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, Missouri, Minnesota, Ohio, Wisconsin, Kentucky, North Dakota, and Tennessee.

Farm Service Agency (FSA) administrator Richard Fordyce says the new deadline is to help accommodate farmers who have been battling the weather.  “Farmers were still trying to make planting decisions up until just a few days ago,” he says.  “If they hadn’t made a decision whether they were going to be able to plant for not plant they weren’t attempting to make an acreage report.”

He tells Brownfield for farmers to be eligible for several USDA programs they have to file their crop acreage reports in a timely manner.  “One that comes to mind is the ARC/PLC program,” he says.  “And any other types of programs that come about.”

Fordyce says farmers in affected states need to call and set up appointments with their local FSA county offices before the July 22nd deadline.

The USDA says as long as the appointment is made before the deadline the acreage report will be considered timely filed even if the actual appointment isn’t until after July 22nd

The USDA has taken additional steps to help producer across the country who have been impacted by the weather this spring including:

  • Updating the haying and grazing date for producers who have planted cover crops on prevented plant acres
  • Offered special sign-ups through the Environmental Quality Incentives Program for assistance to plant cover crops
  • Extended the deadline to report prevented plant acres in certain areas.
