U.S. cotton producers intend to plant 14.5 million cotton acres this spring, up nearly three percent from 2018.

That’s according to the National Cotton Council’s Early Season Planting Intentions Survey. The council says a higher cotton-to-soybean price ratio is the main driver behind the projected increase.

The biggest increases in cotton acreage will come in the Mid-South, with Louisiana up 22 percent, Mississippi up 18 percent and Arkansas up 14 percent. Missouri growers expect to increase cotton acres by nearly seven percent and plant less soybeans, according to the survey.

Other percentage changes by region include the Southeast, down three percent; the Southwest, up two percent; and the West, up three percent.
