Stabenow says the House is playing politics while farmers need certainty

The Ranking Member of the U.S. Senate Ag Committee says while farm bills are traditionally extended beyond four years, she hopes that’s not the case this fall.

“It really does depend on the politics of the House or whether they’re willing to just focus on what our farmers really need right now.”

Michigan Democratic Senator Debbie Stabenow tells Brownfield the Senate’s Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program includes work provisions and there are some areas she’s not willing to compromise.  “I’m not willing to play politics with people’s lives or raise the age of workers like House does so more older people have to work in order to have food.”

Stabenow is on the Farm Bill conference committee which is assigned with coming up with a final farm bill.

Up for re-election this November, Stabenow says there’s no question she’ll maintain a seat as the senior democrat on the Senate Ag Committee if she wins.
