Severe weather headed for the corn belt

Brownfield meteorologist Greg Soulje says planting opportunities will be slim as severe storms move through the Corn Belt in the next week.

“Probably multiple days’ worth of severe weather events from the southern plains into the western Corn Belt and upper lakes region and more to come in the eastern areas.”

He says one to five inches of rain will fall in the western, central and northern regions of the Corn Belt.

Soulje tells Brownfield farmers looking to plant in the next week or two will have to pick their battles.

“It’s going to be really almost a coin toss on some days. What issues do you want to deal with down the line? If you wait, you might be really washed out, even if you have planted there is a concern about wash out.”

He says the wet weather pattern is expected to continue through the first part of June.
