Roundtable focuses on beef sustainability

The U.S. Roundtable for Sustainable Beef has begun a 60-day public comment period on its Sustainability Framework.  Roundtable chairperson Kim Stackhouse-Lawson of JBS USA says the framework focuses on, among other things, succession planning from the standpoint of resource management.

“That’s first what success looks like to me is that beef production exists in 20 years and in 50 years and in 100 years,” Stackhouse-Lawson told Brownfield Ag News Friday, “and that we’re to pass this industry down to our children.”

The roundtable highlights the importance of cattle and effective grazing management plans that improve soil carbon sequestration, said Stackhouse-Lawson.  That positive story, she says, is missing from the conversations about the carbon footprint of beef production.

“I think that it’s critically important that the roundtable has included this and hopefully we can continue to bring to bring these positive stories forward as opportunities,” said Stackhouse-Lawson.

The Roundtable Public Comment Period ends July 1.
