Purdue announces it is leading $10 million effort to address food safety

Purdue University is now home to a lab designed to increase awareness and develop environments for food safety around the world.

The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) awarded $10 million to Purdue to establish the first-ever Feed the Future Innovation Lab for Food Safety. There is an opportunity for up to $20 million in more funding from USAID.

Haley Oliver, an associate professor of food science, will direct the lab in collaboration with Cornell University.

She says they must build awareness and understanding of what food safety is so stakeholders are motivated to adopt changes that will improve food safety.

Purdue says scientists will develop programs to improve food safety in Bangladesh, Kenya, Ethiopia, Senegal, and Cambodia.

Purdue Dean of Agriculture Karen Plaut says the lab aligns with the college’s mission to address issues surrounding global food security.

The announcement was made today at the Dauch Alumni Center on the Purdue campus
