NFU wants pause on consolidations

NFU fly in 2019

The recent consolidations in the ag industry are a concern for National Farmers Union members who are meeting this week with lawmakers in D.C.

NFU’s Rob Larew tells Brownfield they believe consolidation has had a negative impact on agriculture, “It’s this ongoing impact. This has been a long time coming even as commodity prices remain in the tank and demand is on the drag, and so forth. Input costs, in general, continue to rise.”

Larew says it’s meant fewer choices for farmers and a growing impact on their ability to improve their bottom line.

He says consolidation is getting a lot of attention in presidential election discussions, “We’re going to be urging folks to look at proposals that put a pause on these consolidations until, at the very least, we can make sure that there isn’t going to be an unnecessary impact.”

Larew says pausing ag consolidation would help producers’ ability to thrive.
