June cheese production up 3.5% on year

The USDA says domestic cheese production during June 2020 was 1.105 billion pounds. That is an increase of 3.5% from June 2019, including a 3% jump for Italian type cheeses and a 2.5% rise for American type cheeses. Wisconsin was the top individual state for American, Cheddar, and Italian type cheese production.

Butter production was 150.018 million pounds, 3.1% less than last year, with California producing about a third of the total.

Nonfat dry milk for human consumption came out at 146.689 million pounds, 7.1% lower, with skim milk powder at 61.253 million pounds, 17.7% higher.

Dry whey totaled 85.369 million pounds, an increase of 2.9%, while lactose for human and animal consumption was reported at 101.076 million pounds, a decrease of 6.9%, and whey protein concentrate totaled 39.483 million pounds, a decline of 0.1%.

June 2020 milk production was up 0.5% from June 2019.
