Iowa Republican delegates will decide party’s ag secretary nominee

Delegates to this Saturday’s Iowa Republican Party state convention will decide who will represent the party in the state ag secretary race this November.

None of the five candidates in last week’s primary election received the 35 percent of the vote required to advance to the general election.  Current ag secretary Mike Naig had the most votes but fell just short of winning the nomination.

“We feel like Republicans sent a pretty clear message that they are pleased with the direction that we’re going right now and the job that I’m doing as secretary,” Naig said.

State Senator Dan Zumbach of Ryan finished second in the primary. Former Iowa Farm Bureau president Craig Lang of Brooklyn came in third, and Ray Gaesser of Corning, a former president of the American Soybean Association, was fourth.  Chad Ingels of Randalia came in fifth.

The Republican nominee will face Democrat Tim Gannon, a former aide to Tom Vilsack, in the general election.
