Introducing E98 on the diesel market for large truck fleets

The world’s largest biofuel producer says ethanol-blended diesel fuel could revolutionize the transportation sector.

Doug Berven, vice president of corporate affairs with POET, says companies with large fleets are looking for cleaner, alternative fuel options. “You’re not going to electrify the heavy-duty truck market. They’re looking for other solutions.  If they can use ethanol to run these trucks rather than diesel, it reduces the carbon intensity of these trucks tremendously.”

Speaking with Brownfield during the 2022 National Association of Farm Broadcasting, he said ethanol in diesel fuel is widely available, but engine technology isn’t. “It’s only in a limited number of trucks today. You won’t see that really widescale until the next few years.  That’s about the timeline.”

And, Berven says, the fuel blend is similar to E85. “We need to talk to truck stops to be able to supply E98 around the country.  We need to work on that infrastructure as we are working on the diesel engine technology.”

He says the price point between diesel fuel and E98 is very close.
