Innovature is a gene editing conversation online

A new online hub for conversations about gene-editing in agriculture has been launched by the American Seed Trade Association (ASTA) and BIO, the largest trade association of biotech companies.

Bernice Slutsky with the ASTA tells Brownfield there’s a lot to talk about on the INNOVATURE site, “Applications that have to do with our food, our environment and our well being.”

Gene editing can be used on all crops, says Slutsky, “And, it’s also a tool that can be used by large companies, small companies – so it’s really, it has wide applications and benefits.”

Gene editing is being studied by universities and companies for use in both field crops and vegetables, “Looking at drought tolerance, for example. Healthier oils. Healthier plants, in fact, because of disease pressure.”

Slutsky says the Innovature site will open the discussion on other topics in the future related to agriculture.

  • Always great to see ASTA and specifically Bernice’s leadership in this area (Gene Editing). A huge potential tool for the continued improvement of our food crops by universities and others.
