Illinois Wheat Tour off to a strong start

Dave Devore with Siemer Milling tells Brownfield the first field of the day was impressive. “If this field is any indication of what we’re going to see the rest of the day, we’re going to be extremely pleased,” he says.

He says tiller counts were high with nice-sized heads and no signs of disease in the field just outside of Effingham, but they are keeping an eye out for certain characteristics throughout the day. “At this point in time I think we’re pretty optimistic that any potential scab damage may not be too severe,” he says.  “Those are the reports we’re hearing at this point in time.  And with freeze damage, we’ll see what happens when we get further south, but here at this field there’s nothing like that right now.

Tour groups left from 4 different locations in the southern half of Illinois this morning and will collect data from around 50 random fields across at least a dozen counties.
