Gerstenberger to lead American Sugarbeet Growers Association

A Michigan farmer has been re-elected to head the American Sugarbeet Growers Association for a second term.

Speaking to Brownfield on his return home from the American Sugarbeet Growers Association annual meeting, Rick Gerstenberger says priorities for the organization have included passing the farm bill and clarifying labeling requirements for sugarbeets.

“All of the beets and sugar produced in the U.S. is biotech.  We went over the labeling requirements and reviewed the biotech labels.  Sucrose is sucrose, the sugar is the same. There is no DNA in it and therefore it is not a biotech product.”

The group represents more than 10,000 sugarbeet farm families across the U.S.

Gerstenberger grows sugarbeets, corn, alfalfa and soybeans in Michigan’s Thumb and is also the chairman of the Michigan Sugar Company.
