CME dairy prices up slightly, GDT index holds steady

Milk futures and cash dairy prices were slightly higher at the Chicago Mercantile Exchange Tuesday.  The Global Dairy Trade event index held steady.

At Chicago, August Class Three milk was up $.01 at $14.83.    September was up $.11 to $15.59. October was up $.07 to $16.04.  November was up $.05 at $16.08. The milk futures from December through next July ranged from one to five cents higher.

Dry whey was up $.0025 at $.4375 cents per pound.  One carload sold at that price.

Barrels were unchanged at $1.4850 per pound.  Four carloads sold from $1.4850 to $1.4875.

Forty-pound blocks were up $.0075 at $1.5775 per pound.  Three carloads sold from $1.5675 to $1.57.

Grade AA Butter was up $.01 at $2.3150 per pound.  Five carloads sold from $2.3025 to $2.3150.

Nonfat dry milk was up $.0075 at $.8375 per pound.  Two carloads sold at $.8375 and $.84.

The Global Dairy Trade index from Tuesday’s event was unchanged, with the average price holding at $3,136 dollars per metric ton.  

Whole milk powder, anhydrous milk fat and rennet casein made gains while other prices went down.  

Whole milk powder was up a tenth of a percent to $2,958 a metric ton, or $1.34 per pound.

Skim milk powder was down three-tenths of a percent to $1,972 a metric ton, or $.89 per pound.

Casein jumped 8% selling for $4,971 a metric ton, or $2.25 a pound.

Anhydrous milk fat gained 1.2% selling for $5,709 a metric ton, or $2.58 a pound.

Butter fell 3.2% selling at $4,802 a metric ton, or $2.17 a pound.

Buttermilk powder was down 5.9% to $2,441 a metric ton, or $1.10 a pound.

Cheddar cheese was up 1.3% to $3,663 a metric ton, or $1.66 a pound.

Lactose and sweet whey powder were not offered in Tuesday’s event.
