Dairy industry upset with WHO proposal

The U.S. dairy industry is challenging a proposal from the World Health Organization to restrict the promotion of dairy products for young children.

Chris Galen with the National Milk Producers Federation (NMPF) tells Brownfield the federation and the International Dairy Foods Association are urging Congress to request the WHO go back to the drawing board on its proposed guidelines.  “It really runs counter to a lot of the nutritional advice that our own government puts out as well as other government around the world.”

Galen says the dairy industry agrees with the WHO that breastfeeding is important for infants. But, he says the WHO’s guidance does not reflect the science which supports the benefits of including milk and dairy foods in children’s diets.

He says the WHO’s proposal also contradicts the 2015 Dietary Guidelines for Americans which calls for three servings of dairy a day for everyone.
