Breaking Down Barriers: Helping Patients Get Therapies Quickly
By Kevin Kettler, President, CoverMyMeds

The medication access and reimbursement process spans a continuum of stakeholders. Pharmaceutical companies are at one end, developing and launching critical therapies. Patients are at the other end, seeking these therapies in the most affordable, efficient way possible.

On its surface, the process seems straightforward. Yet too often, patients are unable to access the medicine they need. (Source: CoverMyMeds Patient Survey, 2022) So, what's getting in between therapies and the patients who need them?

Financial constraints, navigating complex prescribing journeys, and fragmentation between stakeholders across the access and reimbursement process often result in delays—or abandoned therapy. (Source: CoverMyMeds Patient Survey, 2022) These challenges reflect the complexities of our healthcare system, and the solutions are seemingly just as complicated.

But perhaps we can unlock the answer with one simple question: What if there were no barriers across the therapy access and reimbursement process?

Eliminating those barriers is no easy task. It requires the simplification of provider experiences, actionable data, and, perhaps most importantly, human insight and expertise.

REMOVING BARRIERS FOR A SIMPLIFIED PROVIDER EXPERIENCE

To help patients access the medicine they need, providers’ staff often spend their days navigating a maze of manual processes and disconnected systems—phone calls, faxes, multiple logins, and a mix of access points.

This fragmented process can delay treatment, leading to increased anxiety and stress for patients (60%), worsened symptoms (40%), and even a progression of the patient’s condition (18%). (Source: CoverMyMeds Patient Survey, 2022) For patients dealing with potentially life-threatening conditions, this is clearly unacceptable.

So, how can providers break down the barriers caused by disparate systems? Providers need a single point of access that connects them to a network of pharmacies and payers.

With a single point of entry, providers can improve their workflow and access expanded services using the systems that they already have in place. Setting up something as simple as automated patient messaging can save valuable time for provider staff while helping people get on therapy quickly.

DATA BECOMES MORE ACTIONABLE WITH A SINGLE SOURCE OF TRUTH

To improve time to therapy, manual tasks in the access and reimbursement process—such as prior authorization and copay processing—should be automated. But automation is just a starting point.

In addition to reducing manual tasks, automation can also mine actionable data. With better consultation through data-driven recommendations, pharma brands can uncover new ways to evolve and optimize their programs to better serve patients.

However, the reliance on multiple vendors to understand how a brand is performing in the patient acquisition and retention funnel continues to perpetuate barriers caused by fragmentation.

Delivering solutions that break down barriers for patients becomes easier with a single, trusted source of truth. Though, most stakeholders are justifiably wary of "single solution" pitches because they've heard too many overpromises from vendors that consistently underdeliver. They’re also tired of generic, templated solutions that are bloated with unneeded services.

That may be because removing barriers isn’t just about access to data, automation or improved provider workflows. It also requires human insight and a personalized approach.

OVERCOMING BARRIERS REQUIRES HUMAN SUPPORT AND SPECIALIZED EXPERTISE

For specialty medications, the patient’s journey is often so complex that automated processes alone aren’t enough. Human insight is needed to pick up where technology can’t do the job alone. That’s why CoverMyMeds offers consultative guidance in addition to tech solutions.

With 20+ years of hub and patient services experience supporting more than 100 brands (including more than 30 oncology brands), we partner with pharma throughout their product lifecycles to connect their therapies to patients who need them to live their fullest lives.

We’ve seen it all, so we know what works. That experience enables us to deliver a tailored approach that helps pharma companies reduce hoops, hurdles and hassles.

ARE YOU READY TO BREAK DOWN BARRIERS?

CoverMyMeds may be best known for simplifying the provider experience by automating the prior authorization process over the past 16 years. But we’re so much more than that. From hub services to differentiated copay strategies and a full-service pharmacy dispensing network, we have developed a streamlined infrastructure for providers and pharmacies to help connect patients with the support they need to access, afford and adhere to their prescribed therapies.

Even in a fragmented and complex ecosystem, there is unifying power of simplicity — and we’re constantly innovating to streamline and bring stakeholders together. Our pharma clients can help providers and patients overcome barriers by leveraging CoverMyMeds’ connections to 950,000 providers, 50,000 pharmacies and all the leading payers/PBMs. From mitigating financial constraints to navigating complex prescribing journeys and insurance requirements, we help pharma companies benefit from the reach of our network.

So, what if there were no barriers? That's the question our CoverMyMeds team is looking forward to discussing at Asembia’s AXS24 Summit.
