SFC Donald Rice

FORT WORTH-Sergeant First Class (SFC) Donald Rice, 78, died peacefully on Thursday, July 26, 2018.
Memorial service: A military memorial with full honors will take place at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, November 14, 2018 at Dallas Fort Worth National Cemetery.
Celebration of life: To be determined at a later date in California.
Donald was a veteran of the Vietnam War, his third tour of duty he was an assistant recon leader with Special Operations Group attached from 5th Special Forces Group and was awarded the Bronze Star. SFC Rice was born November 14, 1939 in Los Angeles, California to Malcolm and Serena Rice. In 1957, he joined the armed forces and was assigned to the Army base camp in Fort Ord, California. After graduating from special training in Fort Campbell, Kentucky, he was assigned as a paratrooper to the 82nd Airborne Division stationed in Germany as a Private, He eventually served three combat tours in Vietnam and was awarded the Bronze Star. In 1978, SFC Rice was discharged with full honors. In 1980, he served as a mail carrier with United States Postal Service until his retirement in 1998. He spent his remaining years taking care of his ex-wife and spending time with his grandchildren. SFC Rice was a brave and loyal soldier, as well as a supportive and loving father. He married Vita Medrano in Okinawa, Japan in 1969. A natural problem solver, he often was working on some kind of puzzle whether it was a crossword puzzle, word jumble, sodoku puzzle, or a math problem. He enjoyed competition in a variety of sports and games to include running, tennis, racquetball, pool, ping pong and golf.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Malcolm and Serena Rice.
Survivors: Ex-wife, Vita; daughter, Elizabeth; son, Donald; two grandchildren, Daryn and Shaylin; and his three sisters, Patricia, Susan and Roberta; and one brother, Glenn.
