Paducah mayor orders city flag to half-staff to honor community leader

PADUCAH, Ky. (KBSI) – Paducah Mayor George Bray directed the city of Paducah flag be lowered to half-staff from Friday through Sunday in honor of Mary Hammond.

Hammond died on March 3. She served the community in multiple roles including executive director of the Paducah Convention & Visitors Bureau, member of the Paducah Civic Beautification and National Quilt Museum boards and Paducah Ambassador.

The Paducah Civic Beautification Board is also donating seven dogwoods in honor of Hammond. The trees will be planted Monday, March 11 at Dolly McNutt Memorial Plaza.

Hammond served 23 years as executive director for the Paducah Convention & Visitors Bureau.

City leaders remember her a dedicated to promoting her community and achieving international recognition for Paducah with Paducah’s designation as a UNESCO Creative City in 2013 as a pinnacle of accomplishments.

“Each and every year, day after day, she’s outworked and surpassed everyone, and her legacy is going to live for a very long time,” said Glenn Denton, chairman of the Paducah Convention & Visitors Bureau, in Hammond’s obiturary.
