Crop ratings slip again in Ohio

Ohio’s crop conditions continue to slip.

As of the Sunday, June 5, the condition of the Ohio corn crop was 77 percent fair-to-good, down two points from a week ago.

4 percent of the corn crop is silking, that’s six points behind the 5-year average.

73 percent of the Ohio soybean crop is in fair-to-good condition, a four point drop from last week’s 77 percent.

11 percent of the soybeans are blooming, that compares to the 13 percent 5-year average.

At 13 percent complete, the Ohio wheat harvest is well behind the 37 percent average.

In North Central and Northwest Ohio wheat harvest got underway over the 4th of July holiday. Randy Preston, manager of the Heritage Coop Branch in Dola says the wheat crop in northern Hardin County is better than he expected.

“The test weight has been like 54 to 60, we’ve had anywhere from 13.3 to 20.5 moisture,” said Preston. “There is some sprout damage, two percent maybe sprout damage, so I guess it is better than what I thought it would be.”

First cutting alfalfa is 67 percent complete, up 17 points from last week. Second cutting alfalfa is 23 percent complete.

As of Sunday, topsoil moisture in Ohio is 99 percent adequate to surplus.
