Nixon: Remember the evolution of ethanol

A Midwest governor says the evolution of ethanol is important to remember.

Missouri Governor Jay Nixon tells Brownfield everyone needs to step back and look at 2003 when gas prices were going up and foreign countries were dictating to the U.S. how much people were paying at the pump, “Basically, we were, you know, we were forced to have gas prices way too high. One of the significant reasons we’ve been able to bring those prices down is that our farmers and our ethanol industry and our biodiesel industry, our biofuels industry, has stepped up!”

Nixon says now is not the time to back away from the commitment, “It’s important for the economy here. It’s important for the environment because it produces less problems with greenhouse gases. And, it’s important for foreign policy where we can remain independent – energy independent.”

Brownfield asked Nixon if he thinks the EPA is listening, “Well, we’ll see.  They’re here. It’s a good sign that they came to the Heartland.”

Nixon and Iowa Governor Terry Branstad say their farmers can meet the need for an increased Renewable Fuels volume mandate if EPA would just raise the Renewable Fuels Standard (RFS).

They both testified at the EPA hearing in Kansas City, Kansas, last week.
