A contrast of weather across the Corn Belt

Across the Corn Belt, warm, dry weather favors rapid corn and soybean development across the upper Midwest. In contrast, cool, showery weather is maintaining unfavorably wet conditions in much of the eastern Corn Belt.

On the Plains, hot weather in Montana favors winter wheat maturation and the rapid development of spring sown crops. Meanwhile on the southern Plains, isolated showers are causing only minor fieldwork delays.

In the South, pockets of dryness persist east of the Mississippi River, despite the recent trend toward cooler, more showery weather. Currently, showers are mostly confined to northern Florida and the interior Southeast.

In the West, record-setting heat continues. The most extreme heat, relative to normal, persists across the interior Northwest. On the 28th, Walla Walla, Washington, reached 113°, setting a state record for the month of June. Boise, Idaho (110° on June 28), established its June record. The Northwestern heat wave is hastening winter wheat maturation and severely stressing rangeland, pastures, and dryland summer crops.
