Cooler days for the Corn Belt; still wet

A final round of heavy rain can be expected later Friday across the lower Midwest, bringing the threat of additional flooding. Scattered showers will return to the Corn Belt during the weekend and early next week, boosting 5-day rainfall totals to 1 to 3 inches or more from the middle Mississippi Valley to Ohio. As much as 2 to 4 inches should occur in portions of the Northeastern and Mid-Atlantic States. Meanwhile, cooler air will arrive in the Southeast, accompanied by scattered showers. A few showers will also develop in the Southwest, but very hot, dry conditions will spread from the remainder of the western U.S. to the northern High Plains.

Looking ahead, the 6- to 10- day outlook calls for the likelihood of above-normal temperatures across the northern High Plains, lower Southeast, and much of the West. In contrast, cooler-than-normal conditions can be expected in a broad area stretching from the southern Plains to the Great Lakes States. Meanwhile, near- to above-normal rainfall across the majority of the U.S. will contrast with drier-than-normal weather in southern Florida and from the Pacific Northwest to the northern Plains.
