Heavy rains cross parts of the Corn Belt

Across the Corn Belt, numerous Flood Warnings are in effect across the middle Mississippi Valley, where another round of heavy rain fell overnight into Friday. Cool, showery weather is also occurring elsewhere in the Midwest, except across the northernmost Corn Belt. Pockets of excessive wetness are most concentrated across the southern and eastern Corn Belt, from Missouri to Ohio.

On the Plains, dry weather is returning to Montana and the Dakotas. Meanwhile on the central and southern Plains, showers and thunderstorms are slowing winter wheat harvesting but generally benefiting summer crops.

In the South, heat (afternoon temperatures above 95°) lingers in parts of Georgia and the Carolinas. However, showers continue to increase in coverage, providing some relief to drought-stressed crops.

In the West, an early-season heat wave is underway. Friday’s high temperatures could approach 105° in the Northwest, including some typically cooler locations west of the Cascades. Several wildfires are burning in the Pacific Coast States and the Desert Southwest, and there is an enhanced risk that lightning could start additional fires later Friday from the Sierra Nevada northward into Oregon.
