April a little more profitable on the farm

The Index of Prices Received by Farmers increased 2 percent in April.  Corn averaged $3.75 per bushel down 6 cents from March.  Soybeans were 14 cents lower at $9.70 per bushel.  All wheat was also 14 cents lower at $5.56 and all hay was up $13 at $173 per ton.

On the livestock side, beef cattle were $2 higher at $162 per hundredweight, hogs were $1.30 lower at $49 per hundredweight.  Broilers were up a nickel at 64 cents per pound, turkeys were nearly 2 cents higher at 70.2 cents and eggs dropped nearly 54 cents to 87 cents per dozen.  The April all milk price was $16.50 per hundredweight down 10 cents from March.

The April Index of Prices Paid by Farmers was unchanged from March.  Lower prices for concentrates, complete feeds, supplements and diesel were offset by higher prices for feeder cattle, hay and forages, nitrogen and self-propelled machinery.

Compared to a year ago, Prices Received by Farmers are down 9.6 percent while Prices Paid by Farmers are 1.8 percent lower.
