Biodiesel likes RFS numbers more than ethanol

Programs ICONThe US Ethanol industry is not happy with the EPA’s Renewable Fuels Standard proposals announced today but the Biodiesel industry says it’s a step in the right direction.

The slightly higher volumes are “not perfect, but will get the U.S. biodiesel industry growing again and put people back to work,” said Joe Jobe, CEO of the National Biodiesel Board.  Jobe tells Brownfield Ag News the proposed volumes for 2016 and 2017 must be higher.

“We’re very, very confident we not only can supply those numbers, but they need to be strengthened,” said Jobe.  “We can contribute much more.”

The American Ethanol Coalition is very disappointed with the methodology used by EPA, which resulted in lower numbers.  The agency continues to wrongly use the E-10 blend wall, said Brian Jennings, that organization’s CEO.

“They’re saying no ethanol use can occur beyond 10 percent of gasoline demand,” Jennings told Brownfield. “That’s inconsistent with the law, that’s inconsistent with congressional intent, and that’s really where we need to fix this.”

The CEO of POET ethanol plants says, “the targets announced today fall well short of rural America’s potential to produce low-cost, clean-burning ethanol.”

Jennings tells Brownfield the silver lining is the EPA proposal is open for public comment through July 27th and it’s important everyone who cares about this issue do that.

  • We need to educate our Congressional representatives as to what our capabilities are – including what the product can and can not do for the engines it powers. Also, by supporting the industry now will yield better products in the not so far off future.
