It’s getting hot outside and that means summer and BBQ season is here!   During the summer months we often like to eat out on our sun porch at the table we have out there.  It’s nice to sit out there with the breeze blowing on us and to enjoy the sunshine.  It’s also convenient to eat there when we are grilling out.

When it’s just my husband and I eating it’s not a big deal to bring out napkins and silverware for us, but when we have company it becomes a pain.  Plus there’s always someone who drops a fork on the floor or needs another napkin and I have to rush inside to get it.   It would be so much easier to have everything already on the table.   That’s when I decided I needed to make some fun Summer Silverware Holders.

Make your own Summer Silverware Holders

I started looking around my house to see if there was anything I could use to make the holders.   Downstairs in the basement I found many shelves of Mason Jars.   I grabbed two pint sized jars and took them upstairs.   I started thinking about how I could jazz them up to make them cute and table ready.

DIY Silverware Holders are spray Painted bright colors for summer.

My idea was simple….spray paint the jars and then decorate them to look like summer fruits!   I chose bright pink and yellow for my colors because I thought they would work well together and they really stood out.   I took the jars out in the yard, placed a piece of newsprint down so as not to paint the lawn, and went to work.   I used a spray paint that dried in 20 minutes but in order to make sure I didn’t stain my hands, I wanted about 30 minutes to continue.

I left the yellow jar as it was but I used a permanent marker to put “seeds” on the pink jar making it look like a watermelon.    I then got out my mini glue gun and I glued a bright green ribbon around the jar mouth of the pink jar and a bright orange ribbon around the jar mouth of the yellow jar.  I was so happy with how they turned out!

Now instead of carry the silverware out, then the napkins, and running in to get extras as needed I simply fill the jars with spoons, forks, knives, and napkins and our guests can help themselves whenever they need something additional.  Plus, they make a great centerpiece as well!   If you don’t want to use them as silverware holders, they make great containers for fresh cut flowers too.
