Le littoral varois est extraordinaire non seulement pour ses belles plages, mais aussi pour ses espaces naturels. Parmi les plus remarquables, les salins d’Hyères sont un ensemble de zones humides en deux unités géographiques distinctes qui sont écologiquement et paysagèrement complémentaires :

The coast of the Var department is extraordinary not only for its beautiful beaches, but also for its nature reserves. Among the most remarkable are Hyères‘s salt marshes, a set of two separate wetlands which are ecologically and "scenically" complementary:

Au départ l’abri d’une pêcherie, en 1848 l’étang des Pesquiers a été transformé en « salin », ou marais salant, pour permettre la récolte de sel. Cette exploitation a continué jusqu’en 1995. Quant aux Vieux Salins, l’exploitation du sel là-bas a commencé dans le Xe siècle et a continué jusqu’à 1966, avec une reprise d’activité entre 1984 et 1995.

Translation

Originally a fishery, in 1848 the Pesquiers pond was transformed into a salt marsh to allow salt harvesting. This work continued until 1995. As for the Vieux Salins, the harvesting of salt there began in the 10th century and continued until 1966, with a resumption of activity between 1984 and 1995.

Les deux salins ont été acquis par le Conservatoire du littoral en 2001 et possèdent une grande diversité de faune et de flore.

La métropole Toulon Provence Méditerranée est gestionnaire des salins depuis 2004. Elle collabore avec le Conservatoire du Littoral, le Parc national de Port-Cros et la Commune d’Hyères pour préserver ces sites exceptionnels et les ouvrir au public.

Translation

The two marshes were acquired by the Conservatoire du littoral (coastal conservatory) in 2001 and possess extremely diverse fauna and flora.

The Toulon Provence Méditerranée metropolis has managed the salt marshes since 2004, and collaborates with the Conservatoire du littoral, the Parc national de Port-Cros (national park of the island of Port Cros), and the City of Hyères to preserve these exceptional sites and make them available to the public.
