How to draw 63Y

Zentangle pattern: 63Y. Image © Linda Farmer and TanglePatterns.com. All rights reserved.Taiwan CZT Hsin-Ya Hsu’s 63Y is a tangle pattern with an unusual name and a simple variation of the diamond-shaped grid at its base.

Hsin-Ya writes that her inspiration 63Y was a wall divider in a restaurant.

I think the composition of this pattern looks like six triangles, with ‘Y’ in the triangle. It can be as background, you can also draw something inside, like aura or perfs.

The inspiration for Hsin-Ya Hsu's 63Y Zentangle pattern

In our tutorial “How to draw three types of grids for your tangles“, these are the grid instructions for the “Freehand Diamond-Shaped Grid”:

Steps for drawing a freehand diamond grid for your tangles. Image © Linda Farmer and TanglePatterns.comIn her instructions Hsin-Ya’s shows another creative way to form this base grid by drawing the horizontal lines of Step 6 above first and then using zigzag lines to form the rest of the grid (see her Steps 1 and 2 below).

Zentangle pattern: 63Y. Image © Linda Farmer and TanglePatterns.comIn Step 3 below, Hsin-Ya draws a Y-shape in alternate triangular spaces. Then you turn your tile and make those Y-shapes again in the remaining spaces (Step 4). If you have trouble getting the arms of the Ys to meet up to form the nice hexagon, try using my alternate Step 3 here on the right. Then all there’s left to do is add the stems of the Ys. Same result, less strokes.

Hsin-Ya illustrates the step-by-step instructions for drawing 63Y below and her monotangle example includes several pretty variations. for my example I used the variation in the upper left and added a tiny orb at the end of each “arm”.
