Nebraska’s crops need warmer weather

corn-emerging friend 5-13Corn and soybean development in Nebraska has been slowed by cool weather.

Corn emergence, at 73 percent, is still running slightly ahead of average. The first corn condition rating of the season puts the crop at 61 percent good to excellent and 32 percent fair.

Soybean planting is at 59 percent, behind the 73 average. Soybean emergence, at 22 percent, is also running behind average.

Nebraska’s winter wheat crop is rated 36 percent good to excellent, 27 percent fair and 32 percent poor to very poor.  Wet conditions in southeastern Nebraska have been favorable for disease development in some wheat fields, with some producers applying fungicide.

First cutting of alfalfa stood at 11 percent, behind the 20 percent average.

Pasture conditions rated 59 percent good to excellent.
