Illinois wheat condition still in question

Illinois corn planting is almost done – 97 percent complete, which is about the same as last year and the average.  Eighty-seven percent of the corn crop is emerged and the crop is 80 percent good to excellent. Soybeans are 69 percent planted in Illinois – 22 percentage points more than last week. Winter wheat is 82 percent fair to good, and only 8 percent excellent.

It’s too early to tell whether the Illinois winter wheat crop has disease and quality issues, according to Dave DeVore of Seimer Milling, one of the organizers of last week’s Southern Illinois Wheat Tour.

“We need to give the crop another week to ten days to develop,” DeVore told Brownfield Ag News at the completion of the tour Thursday, “and get back out in the fields in ten days and see what’s changed out there and see if there’s anything out there that would be a cause for concern.”

Illinois oats planting is 95 percent complete. Pastures are 83 percent good to excellent.  Illinois topsoil moisture is 97 percent adequate to surplus.
