Dietary Guidelines comment period

DG-pictureWEBThe deadline to submit comments on the proposed dietary guidelines is this Friday, May 8.

Kristina Butts, Executive Director of Legislative Affairs for the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association says NCBA is in the process of finalizing their comments.

“We are weighing in and making sure that the secretaries have a lot of the science that they need to make the right changes and add lean meats back in that healthy overall dietary pattern statement,” Butts said. “Not put forward statements like eat less red and processed meats, when we’re not overeating red and process meats and then at the same time staying within their scope of nutrition and health and not include topics outside that, like sustainability.”

The Pork Checkoff has submitted a second round of comments, including details that research has shown how lean meat, including pork, plays an important role in many aspects of a healthy diet.

“The National Pork Board supports the recommendations in the previous dietary guidelines for the consumption of lean meat and protein foods,” said Adria Sheil-Brown, manager of nutrition communication and research with the National Pork Board. Those recommendations are based on the published science and focused on the benefits of choosing a variety of nutrient-rich foods.”

Comments on the proposed dietary guidelines can be submitted online.
