Biosecurity encouraged
Poultry production experts are pushing for producers of all sizes to practice biosecurity to avoid avian influenza outbreaks. Illinois Extension Small Farms Educator Andy Larson says even backyard poultry producers need to take precautions. His advice is valid in any state, whether or not they’ve had cases confirmed, but Larson was speaking in terms of keeping Illinois free of the disease.
Larson says it’s popular among small poultry producers to tour each other’s farms and compare notes, but he says that’s not such a good idea at until the heat of summer reduces the risk of spreading avian influenza virus.
