WATCH: YouTube Star Discusses Life with Two Vaginas in Refreshingly Candid Video
From acne to bullying to menstruation, YouTube star Cassandra Bankson has made a career out of discussing that which would normally be embarrassing in an open and fun way to her one million-plus followers. So, when she found out last year after a checkup that not only was she short one kidney, but blessed with an extra vagina, the first thing she did was open up about it on her YouTube channel. In a followup interview with Barcroft TV, she described the moment she found out:
“When we got the papers back I asked, ‘do I have two kidneys or one. And [the doctor] said, ‘Yes. And you have two vaginas as I suspected…."
Her vagina, while looking "normal" on the outside, actually has a division in it, creating two distinct cavities with two distinct uteri. The condition is known medically as uterus didelphys. It’s also not without some discomfort.
“Ever since I was younger even without knowing about this condition I would go to the doctor because I was bleeding for 23, 28 days.” Bankson explains. “And I would have two periods a month or I would have crippling cramps and couldn't move… It is extremely difficult to deal with because you don’t know if your period is going to last one week or three.”
The condition is also exceedingly rare: in the United States, uterus didelphys is reported to affect 0.1–0.5% of women.
